Bin Packing Problem: Two Approximation Algorithms
نویسنده
چکیده
The Bin Packing Problem is one of the most important optimization problems. In recent years, due to its NP-hard nature, several approximation algorithms have been presented. It is proved that the best algorithm for the Bin Packing Problem has the approximation ratio 3/2 and the time orderO(n), unlessP=NP. In this paper, first, a -approximation algorithm is presented, then a modification to FFD algorithm is proposed to decrease time order to linear. Finally, these suggested approximation algorithms are compared with some other approximation algorithms. The experimental results show the suggested algorithms perform efficiently. In summary, the main goal of the research is presenting methods which not only enjoy the best theoretical criteria, but also perform considerably efficient in practice.

Extending Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem: Consideration of Priority for Items
In this paper a two-dimensional non-oriented guillotine bin packing problem is studied when items have different priorities. Our objective is to maximize the total profit which is total revenues minus costs of used bins and wasted area. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem where a new coding scheme is introduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed GA, first an upper b...
متن کاملBin-packing with fragile objects and frequency allocation in cellular networks
We consider two related optimization problems: bin-packing with fragile objects and frequency allocation in cellular networks. The former is a generalization of the classical bin packing problem and is motivated by the latter. The problem is as follows: Each object has two attributes, weight and fragility. The goal is to pack objects into bins such that, for every bin, the sum of weights of obj...
متن کاملImproved Approximation Algorithm for Two-Dimensional Bin Packing
We study the two-dimensional bin packing problem with and without rotations. Here we are given a set of two-dimensional rectangular items I and the goal is to pack these into a minimum number of unit square bins. We consider the orthogonal packing case where the edges of the items must be aligned parallel to the edges of the bin. Our main result is a 1.405approximation for two-dimensional bin p...
متن کاملBin Packing Problem: a Linear Constant- Space -approximation Algorithm
Since the Bin Packing Problem (BPP) is one of the main NP-hard problems, a lot of approximation algorithms have been suggested for it. It has been proven that the best algorithm for BPP has the approximation ratio of and the time order of ( ), unless = . In the current paper, a linear approximation algorithm is presented. The suggested algorithm not only has the best possible theoretical factor...
متن کاملCsc5160: Combinatorial Optimization and Approximation Algorithms Topic: Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme 17.1 Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme 17.2 Knapsack Problem
In previous chapters we have seen the definition of a constant factor approximation algorithm. In this chapter, we will introduce the notion of a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS), which allows approximability to any required degree. To illustrate how PTAS works, we will study two examples, including the knapsack problem and the bin packing problem. The dynamic programming technique w...
